After that you will visit the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary on the central plaza, this is the largest cathedral in Central America which got the classic UNESCO world heritage award. Leon was several times the country capital city after the Nicaragua’s independence from Spain. It played a crucial role in the uprising against the regime of the Somoza dictatorship, the movement emerged mostly from students.
