Climbing San Cristobal volcano is another tough challenge for adventure lovers. this is the highest volcano in Nicaragua with 1,745 meters above sea level and still growing.\u00a0 Its eternal fumarole reminds us of the activity in the bowels of the earth.<\/p>\n
It is located in the northwest corner of the country, it has been throwing ash and sand for years making this region one of the most important agriculture area in Nicaragua. Although San Cristobal is sorrounded by four others smaller volcanoes the whole area is often referred to as the San Crist\u00f3bal volcanic complex, San Crist\u00f3bal is the most active and youngest volcano of the group. It is a nearly symmetrical stratovolcano rising in a distinctive cone shape with a crater of\u00a0 500 x 600 meters in size. While the volcano was at one point covered in tropical forests, the large quantities of gas and smoke that it emits constantly have killed off much of the vegetation.<\/p>\n

This trek is a real challenge and requires an early departure as well as a good physical condition. The adventure begins with a jeep transfer to\u00a0Las Rojas<\/strong>\u00a0coffee farm located at the lower part of the volcano about 600 meters high. After getting your daypack and trekking poles you will start a 5 hours trek up the volcano over steep flanks that make it hard to reach the summit. During this phase as you move higher will enjoy great views while the wind turn refreshing so always use that as motivation. Once on top the spectacular panoramic views and the experience of reaching the crater will be rewarding, this is a good time for a nice group picture, eat some snacks and recharge your battery.
