This hike takes you along a natural trail through a group of volcanoes, all lined up and interconnected. It is an ideal day hike, taking approximately six hours to complete the round trip. With moderate difficulty, plenty of shade, and beautiful landscapes, it is a great adventure to enjoy with friends or family.

With its gentle slopes and truncated cone shape, El Hoyo is considered a Hawaiian-type volcano. Its last eruption took place in 1954, causing significant damage to the surrounding areas. Today, it reaches an elevation of 1,088 meters above sea level. Near the summit, fumaroles and craters provide evidence of the volcano’s activity and reveal its geological history.
Thanks to the relatively gentle terrain and abundant vegetation along much of the trail, this hike does not require excellent physical fitness.

The adventure begins early in the morning with a 50-minute drive to the visitor center at the base of the Pilas–El Hoyo volcanic complex, approximately 300 meters above sea level. Most of the drive follows dirt roads through local communities and agricultural fields. After signing the visitor log, we begin our hike, enjoying beautiful views that make the adventure rewarding from the very beginning. About an hour later, we reach a flatter section with plenty of shade, allowing us to conserve energy for the final stretch, where vegetation becomes scarce.

At the summit, you will enjoy superb 360-degree panoramic views and have the opportunity to take photos of the entire volcanic chain that makes this region so fascinating.

After that you will continue hiking back down for another 1.5 hours on the same trail, followed by the drive back to Leon.
