El Hoyo Volcano Hike

In this hike you will go on a trail along a group of active and inactive volcanoes all of them lined up and interconnected to each other. It is an ideal length hike taking aproximately five hours to reach the top and come back. With moderate difficulty, lot of shade and beautiful landscapes it is the perfect option for an adventure with friends or family.

Due to its extended slopes and truncated cone El hoyo is considered a kind of hawaiian volcano. Its last eruption took place in 1954, it caused lot of damages in the surroundings areas. Nowadays it reaches an altitude of 1088 meters above sea level. On the upper part there are fumaroles and a couple of inactive craters which show us his past and present activity.

Due to the low inclination and the existence of abundant vegetation this walk does not require great physical condition. The adventure start early in the morning with a 50 minutes transfer to the visitor center located at the base of the volcanic complex Pilas – El Hoyo at 300 meters above sea level. Most of the ride will be on dirt roads across communities and growing fields.

After signing a book of visitors we start hiking up enjoying some great views that stimulate the adventure from the very begining. Aprox one hour later we will be walking on flat ground with lots of shade allowing us to save energy for the final part where there is no vegetation.

From the top you will enjoy a superb 360 degree view while taking photos of the entire group of volcanoes which make this region really interesting.
