MARIBIOS EXPEDITION

 A MULTI-SPORTS ADVENTURE

Overview

Many of the best hikes in Nicaragua are trails exploring volcanoes. Certainly, there’s a good reason why Nicaragua is called the land of lakes and volcanoes. In this expedition we include three active Nicaraguan volcanoes which are positioned along the volcanic chain called the Maribios (Marrabios) Chain. It extends 72km parallel to the pacific coast forming a line of ten interconnected volcanoes, five of them remain active and keep growing. From hiking and camping to volcano boarding, swimming and cycling you’ll be able to do it all in an epic outdoor experience.

Itinerary

DAY 1: TELICA VOLCANO

Today we meet our team over lunch for a comprehensive briefing on the challenge ahead. Then we transfer for around one hour and a half in a 4×4 vehicle to the slopes of the Telica volcano where we trek for a couple of hours towards the crater and camping area in time for sunset.

DAY 2: CERRO NEGRO

This morning we’ll enjoy a beatiful sunrise ideal for a photo session from the crater area. After that; we’ll continue our adventure hiking 3 hours down hill to the vehicle that will take us to the bottom of Cerro Negro Volcano. We stop for lunch then hike to the top at one of the youngest and most active volcanoes on earth. There are no trees or plants on its steep scree slopes so we have the advantage of uninterrupted views from the summit of neigboring volcanoes, western plain as well as the Pacific Ocean. We’ll board down back to the bottom then trek to our second overnight camp at the ranger station just 1Km away.

DAY 3: EL HOYO VOLCANO

Today we prepare for our third and last challenge, we´ll start the hike to the top of El Hoyo volcano at 04:00 in the morning to enjoy the first light of day and take the best photos. Then we’ll hike down four more hours following a norrow and shaded trail in the opposite direction towards the pristine Asososca Lagoon where we can swim, eat lunch and relax while enjoying a unique panoramic view. Finally; we’ll continue by bike peddaling 5 km to our final destination, the shores of Lake Managua where we can take last group photos and celebrate the end of the adventure. From here we will travel directly to Leon.
