The reserve is located just 22 kilometers from the city of Leon near the pacific beach town Las Peñitas. It comprises an area of tropical dry forest, mangroves, and a coastal estuary. Over the years this reserve has provided habitat to thousands of birds and  other wetland creatures such as crocodiles and iguanas.

The Reserve also plays a very important role in the lives of many people who live nearby serving as a protective barrier against hurricanes and storms. It remains mostly unexplored so it is also an important nesting spot for sea turtles like the famous olive ridley turtle, only in season between August and February. During the tour you will get out of your boat and walk a few meters  across the island to visit a secluded beach where you can enjoy a private walk, swim or just relax while overlooking the ocean.
