Somoto Canyon

In this tour you will travel to the northern region to explore the impressive Somoto Canyon and practice various adventure activities along 2.5 kilometers in the area where the largest river in Central America, the Coco River, is born.

The Somoto Canyon was formed about 10 million years ago and has a volcanic origin with cliffs of 230 meters hight, with only 10 meters away from each other and almost 5KM long. The local people  used to call it “Estrechura” or “Namancambre”, which means “narrow river” in indigenous language. It was recently discovered and declared a protected area, under the category of National Monument.

The adventure begins at 04:30 in the morning with the transfer from your hotel to the city of Somoto commonly known as the city of donkeys. During the journey you will stop for breakfast while you can stretch out a little and then continue the ride observing mountainous landscapes, multiple crops fiels as well as picturesque towns.

Upon arrival at the Canyon entrance, you will report your visit and after a short briefing will continue walking 25 minutes following a narrow path into the riverbed having an excellent panoramic view.

Once it is all set to jump in the water, you will continue the adventure sliding down the river in direction to the narrowest part. Between the walls you will undertake various activities such as swimming, do litle jumps, walk on the polished rock and even pedall a rowboats while spotting some interesting birds and plants. Finally you will move out of the canyon and go for lunch in a nearby community, lunch will be served by a resident family. After that you will be ready to travel back to Leon not without first stopping in Somoto and tasting the famous rosquillas a kind of corn ring bread quite known nation wide and beyond.

The tour has a medium difficulty level however there are loose and smooth rocks so be aware and follow the guide’s instructions.
