DAY 1:

Telica Volcano (1080 Mtrs | 8 Hours)

This morning we meet you up over breakfast and have a comprehensive briefing on the challenge ahead. After that you will take a 1 hour jeep ride to the bottom of Telica volcano, one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes. First you will hike through a tropical forest following a double track trail all the way to the top right near the crater. The views from the top are spectacular. Telica has erupted frequently, and ash from those frequent eruptions keeps the slopes of its cone bare of vegetation.  The top of the crater sits at over 1000 meters and some times it is possible to peak into the crater and see lava. After lunch and time to enjoy the top we begin the 10km trek down the other side. The last kilometer of trail takes us through a field of bubbling mud pools to the community of San Jacinto, our home for the night.

day 2

Rota Volcano (832 Mtrs | 6 Hours)

After breakfast you will start your second challenge trek on Rota volcano with more shade than the first day. Rota is located in the middle of the volcanic chain between 2 active volcanoes. Going up you will taste a cup of coffee prepared by a local family at the place known as El Cacao located half way up from the top. This is the most vegetated part of the reserve, however the terrain here becomes steeper and the temperature turn out more humid. The top is relatively flat and you will have excellent views over the vast agricultural plain as well as the pacific litoral. Just below the top you will observe the old Rota’s crater with 1 kilometer in diameter where there use to be a lagoon. The soil here is still very fertile so the locals take advantage of it harvesting various crops. After lunch you will continues trekking down for 2 hours passing through typical Nicaraguan farmland and several small settlements on our way to the town of Rota. It is an eye opening experience to the way people live in this area of Nicaragua. Today’s 14km trek end up in the community of Rota, your second campsite.

day 3:

Cerro Negro Volcano (726M | 5 hours)

Today your volcanoes challenge continues treking on flat terrain and sand dunes towards the ranger station in the Cerro Negro Volcano Natural Reserve located at 300 meters above sea level. After reporting your visit and having lunch you will get ready to conquist one of the youngest and most active volcanoes on earth. Cerro Negro (The black hill) was formed 161 years ago erupting 18 times since then. The volcanic activity here has made it impossible for trees and plants to grow on the steep black slopes so you have the advantage of uninterrupted views from the summit over the volcanoes that surround you and the Pacific Ocean as well.

Going down is a lot easier and fun due to the amound of soft sand, it is just perfect for volcano boarding and get back to the base in 5 minutes or less. From the base it is a short hike to our camp at the ranger station.

day 4

El Hoyo Volcano (1089 Mtrs | 7 Hours)

In the early morning you will hike towards your fourth active volcano El Hoyo. This volcano can be easily recongnized by the huge hole located on its slope. With two inactive craters and a permanent fumarole we can see its past and present activity. In term of panoramic views this one will be one of your favorite so get your camera ready to shoot.

For the descent you’ll continue by foot during 4 hours till you reach the Asososca lagoon, a volcanic lake of crystalline waters in the ” Pilas El Hoyo” volcanic group where a quick dip is a real treat! From here we´ll move on driving up over dirt and rocky roads to the next bush camp at the upper part forest on Momotombo volcano.

day 5

Momotombo Volcano (1297M | 5Hrs)

The last trek of the journey is a real challege and a very early departure is required. The time to conquer the most impressive and representative volcano of nicaragua has come. The trek start at around 04.00 a.m, first you will trek with head lamp toward the lookout spots at a fairly steepp and empy black surface, here you will be ablel to see the entire vegetation of the volcano, the smoking cone and much more. Then you will keek going on the upper part of the volcano getting to the finish line on time for sunrise. Due to resent activities it is not safe to climb to the summit but it is possible to reach a spot with equally impressive views.
