This amazing spot is located in the northtern región aprox 3.5 hrs drive from Leon city. The tour consist in hiking and swimming 4.7 kms in the waters of the Coco River. Here we will see volcanic rocks that reach up to 250 mts height allowing you to experience a mix of relaxation and adventure with the option to do Cliff jumping in the wáter. There is also a chance to see a variety of animals and plants along the river.
Hiking
(1 Day)
The Somoto Canyon has volcanic origins where diferent kind of rocks can be found. It is 10 millions years old and was created by a volcanic explotion followed by earthquake that made the rock Split. it was discovered by two scientist from Czech Republic in 2004, before that time the locals used to call it “Estrechura” or “Namancambre” which means “narrow river”
The diffculty of this tour is Medium. there are not up-hills but in the river there are loose and slippery rocks.
The adventure begins from Leon city aprox at 4:00 AM, we will have breakfast on the way to Somoto. On arrival in the Somoto Canyon entrance we jump off the vehicle and start a 20 minutes hike to get to the canyon’s river. This hike will be in a narrow path normally for cows and people who live in the villages around the canyon .
After we make sure everything is ready to jump in the wáter, we start the tour and after aprox 6 hours we’ll arrive in a village to have a typical lunch from locals. Rigth after lunch we continues with the jouney back to Leon.
Camping
(2 days- 1 Night)
Camping in the Somoto Canyon Hills is one the most beautiful expierences a tourist a tourist may achieve, we invite you to spend two days of unforgettable experience sharing time with the locals and enjoying beautiful views and learning about local people traditions.
Day 1
To start the tour we must leave Leon round 1-2 pm right after lunch and that’ll take us 3.5 hours long from Leon to get to the main entrance in the Somoto Canyon, we start the hike from here, the hike to get the three look outs will take us an hour long , from this lookouts we have the opportunity to apreciate nice views from above the canyon hills once we make it to the three lookouts we go to the Mejia’s farm. Mejias Family are a local family living on the hills of the canyon. they are frendly people and they let the tourist be part of the family for all the time they want. We are going to have a typical dinner from the farm (Beans, butter, cheese and eggs) totally homemade right after dinner we go back to the second lookout for camping, we set up the tents and we make a campfire having a beatiful view on the edge from the lookout .
Day 2
Next day we wake up at 6 am to watch the sunrise from the lookout and right after that we go back to the farm for breakfast and the family will teach you some of their traditionals daily Jobs such as trying to make tortillas and milking the cows, right after these activities we start the hike to walk on a path down to the Canyon and we start the tour that is going to be a 3.5 hrs on the river walking and swimming.
